Every Registered Dietitian is a Nutritionist, but not every Nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian. To be brief, a Registered Dietitian has received the necessary education to safely and effectively help clients with their nutritional needs. For example, when people have a musculoskeletal problem they should go see a Physical Therapist, not a personal trainer. Do you agree?

So, if people have a food and nutrition problem, seeing a Registered Dietitian will help them create a plan to have long term results and not temporary changes. Depending on the state it can also be illegal for a “nutritionist” or other “health coach” to provide nutrition counseling, especially if they have a medical condition. Many good nutritionists or health coaches will refer their clients to RDs for the things they are not familiar with, such as diet medication interactions or medical conditions.

Ultimately clients will get guidance, support, direction and clarity on knowing what to eat for their health to reach their individual goals from a qualified Registered Dietitian. They will be given as much helpful tips, advice, tools, resources and accountability to help them reach their goals, which will be of great added value to their PT POC.

Similarly, to a PT Initial Evaluation, a client will first go through a Nutrition Assessment to gather as much information as possible in order for the Registered Dietitian to successfully create a POC.

In Physical or Occupational Therapy, we go through patients’ subjective history, take objective measurements and so forth to get to the root cause of the problem. You cannot skip the IE and go directly into treatment, which is the same reason why we always begin with the nutrition assessment first.

The nutrition assessment consists of things such as reviewing their medical history, anthropometrics, food and nutrition history, weight and physical activity history, medication/herbal intake, nutrition knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, goals and creating a game plan.

Ultimately our nutrition program will be tailored to their individual goals and needs as we hope to be the catalyst to their health journey. We do not believe in a one size fits all approach. Therefore, they will get the expert advice they need to help them reach their goals as safe and fast as possible.
