Do you feel that the only way to lose weight is through dieting? Or that you have to give up all your favorite foods and carbs in order to lose weight?
If you feel that any of the above questions is true you may be in for a surprise because I’m here to tell you that there is another way, a better way, the Winning Wellness way!
The most common problem that I hear clients talk about (before they see me) is what diet should they go on. Is it paleo, keto, gluten free, dairy free, low fat, low carb etc.? It’s the frustration of being given bad advice by the media or “nutritionists” and being very disappointed with the outcome of such advice.
Listen, it makes perfect sense to “diet” if you’ve recently been gaining a lot of weight and are getting ready for some event or competition. However, chronic or yo-yo dieting is guaranteed to make it even more difficult for you to lose weight AND keep it off in the future.
Sure, if you have certain medical conditions, allergies or food intolerances, then it makes perfect sense to be on a “diet”. If you do not have any of the above then you are setting yourself up for failure and decreasing your chances of TRULY losing weight PERMANENTLY by “going on a diet”.
The MAIN PROBLEM with being given the advice to “just go on a diet” when it comes to weight loss is that 95% of diets actually fail.
The VAST MAJORITY of people that suffer from obesity or weight gain come from a SLOW or DAMAGED metabolism that disrupts our bodies over a long period of time. Choosing to “just diet” from these types of “chronic dieting” will often times just make the situation even worse!
The main reason why the “diet” option does nothing for these types of situations is well quite frankly, “dieting” too much is actually what is CAUSING THE WEIGHT GAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE!
As humans our bodies are wired to survive and by severely restricting your calories or crash dieting you are setting off your body’s survival system to SLOW your metabolism down!
There are safe and effective ways to achieve weight loss WITHOUT having constant cravings and feeling like you’re depriving yourself of all your favorite foods.
Diet culture is severely ineffective and is actually a CAUSE for a lot of weight problems to worsen.
“Your body is not Amazon prime, it won’t come in two days” has to be one of my favorite quotes. We are so conditioned in society to get everything VERY FAST that we make the mistake of thinking that our bodies will respond the same way, which is far from the truth.
Slow and steady does win the race if your goal is to PERMANENTLY lose weight and get your health to where you want it to be without relapsing. Time and time again I see people setting themselves up for failure as they immediately jump to the latest FAD diet or “NEW” product and skip the most important step, which is to have a PLAN!
As a Registered Dietitian I have been able to create actual plans for my clients that WORK because it fits their lifestyle in a way that they can sustain. The greatest diet on earth does not mean a thing if you cannot sustain it.
The problem is that most people listen to other unqualified people for health advice. When you have a tooth problem do you go see the Dentist or a “tooth specialist”? If you have a health problem do you go see the Doctor or a “health coach”? There is a massive difference in the level of knowledge and education.
If you have a food and nutrition problem you should see a Registered Dietitian, especially if you have a health condition.
Everybody is different and no one person is the same. Most people don’t take into consideration an individual’s medical history, lifestyle, schedule, eating habits, time, ethnicity, food/cultural preferences etc.
To TRULY make a change everything needs to be taken into consideration otherwise you will fail just like the 95% of people on diets. Again, there is another way, a better way, the Winning Wellness way. If you want to succeed in reaching your goals without going on a crazy diet you can.
